As a descendant of the first settlers in Hobart, Ruben’s daughter is a guest at the bi-centennial event and reflects on her father’s life and the historical journey of distant ancestors.

As brothers growing up during the Great Depression in Victoria, the bond between Ruben and Tom runs deep.  After a family tragedy and a cycling accident, hardship and heartache redirects the lives of the McDonald siblings.  Follow the adventures of the brothers as they head north to make Queensland their home.

The outbreak of World War II sees the brothers enlist.  Ruben’s challenges are many as he struggles with patriotism and the protection of everyone he loves.  Is there something from his past catching up with him?

Ruben’s Journey is based on a true story.

Great read

Joining the dots was never so much fun. Tracing the history of Ruben’s family was captivating.
These historic gems, interwoven with a family’s story kept me reading late into the night.

Thanks Sharyn for putting flesh, bones and character into the stories of the past, making it real in my present.
Well done

Glad I read it

Joining the dots was never so much fun. An amazing effort to roll back the curtain and reveal an untold piece of Australian history.

From the early days in Tasmania to the turn of the twenty first century, the gems revealed in this little treasure chest of one family’s journey, culminating with Ruben’s quest to do everything he could for those he loved be he died, kept me glued to the book.

Well written, Sharyn

Thanks for putting flesh and blood into a history lesson. Glad to have met Ruben.

Couldn’t put it down

Rubens Journey does exactly as the author suggests. You’re swept into a world peppered with intrigue, adventure and sadness, with actual detail into the lives of real people as remembered by Pam. Rubens Journey would make a great documentary or mini series, maybe even a classic Australian play.
Sharyn McDonald has the ability to tell real Australian stories, and I look forward, in great anticipation, of her next book.

Captivating, Great reading

I thoroughly enjoyed being taken back in time. It was like going back in time and escaping back to Ruben's journey.

I struggled to put it down and looked forward to the anticipation of picking up where I left off.

This book shows has an attention to detail rarely matched in it's historical correctness and Sharyn's way with words really takes you back in time to the way things were. Wow!

Literary Gold. Absolutely loved The sense of adventure and the trials and tribulations of a man who finds love for life, family and of course the deep sorrow that comes in the journey of life.

Can't wait to see what's next Sharyn.
