“Chelsea had a smile on her face, her head dangling lifelessly with her eyes wide open, staring into a whole lot of nothing. Her boyfriend was next to her, his expression completely the opposite. His eyes were stitched shut with his mouth gaping wide, as if in a screaming sort of motion. His jaw had been ripped open, the blood drying around the skin; his head facing downwards, straight at my direction. Josie’s close friends were completely exposed and hanging from their hands on the tree in front of me. Their wrists ripped to shreds by the sharp blades of the branches, blood oozing out of their skin like somebody had painted a portrait and was waiting for appraisal. I don’t think I’d ever felt such a weight on my shoulders before, like a darkness had lifted where the sun should have risen and there was absolutely nothing that I could do to stop it.”

My name is Dexter Handfold.
Welcome to my own personal hell.

I'm not a big reader but I loved this thriller/horror. As soon as I started, I couldn't put it down. It has brilliant suspense from start to finish. Highly recommended to anyone that loves a good, scary story.

I enjoyed reading "Your Mind, A Burning City". The characters were interesting and it was an intriguing story; well paced and hard to put down. A really good first novel! I see heaps of potential for a great writing career.

This novel traps us in the mind of fourteen-year-old Dexter Handfold. The writer paints a grim suburbia, where the atmosphere becomes increasingly claustrophobic as we delve into his despair.
The standout for this novel is its fantastic pacing. Each chapter close leaves us just enough information to spark interest for the next and there is never a boring moment. As more of a lighthearted reader, I found myself having to pause at certain reveals throughout the novel due to sheer surprise or because of the strength of a graphic image.
I am continually impressed by the unending chain of 'Aha!' moments that occur as the story unfolds. The seemingly ordinary life of this teenage boy is warped with complex ideas that maintain our interest throughout the story.
It is apparent that the writer is learned in the horror/thriller genre and her book paves way for future works. I am amazed and eager to read more.
