Everywhere you looked the country was parched; no grass or water, except at the Cooper and Kyabra creeks. I had to feed my horses on mulga, beefwood, and whitewood. You could see cattle and horses dying along the roads, and every muddy hole I came to there were dead cattle in them.
The body of a young man named Schultze, who was drowned while attempting to cross a flooded billabong near Stonehenge on the 11th March, has just been found. [1896]

Dear Argyle and Maria, — Mat is ill, and I’m dying for want of water. I am praying for rain and you. Mat wants you to break the cause of his death to his poor old mother and send his love. I am too weak to write now, so goodbye old man and woman and Annie. I hope we shall meet in a better land. Remember me to all of them.
